Vauquois

Visualization of historic war - Visual effects, 3D animation/rendering

Tools: After Effects, Blender, Illustrator

Visual timelapse of the early twentieth-century Vauquois War in France. The project aims to display the effects of the war between France and Germany on a village called Vauquois. It is a historical and educational art display at the Newman Library at Virginia Tech and can be experienced through a virtual reality headset.

My role in this project was to use map data and other written documents about the war to create a visual effect video on a screen for visitors not wearing a VR headset.

Experimented with an animated timestamp to be overlaid on the visual effects video.

The French and Germans dug tunnels and traveled in them to set up explosives.

I used 3D lights in After Effects and path animation to create a visual language that directs the audience’s attention to important elements of the war, such as the tunnels the soldiers took to set off the mines.

Developed a visual language that demonstrated the movement of soldiers in a tunnel

While using color code to symbolize the French and German soldiers, I also developed a visual language that demonstrated the movement of soldiers on the surface.
